How to set up Dolby Vision, HDR and frame rate in Tevium

Set up your device, display and Tevium playback preferences for HDR video and smoother motion, with practical troubleshooting steps.

A good HDR picture needs the stream, Android device and TV to support the same format. Tevium provides decoder and playback controls for that setup, including HEVC, Dolby Vision and HDR10+ on compatible hardware.

1. Check your TV and streaming device

Confirm the HDR formats your TV accepts and your streaming box outputs. For an external box, use an HDR-capable HDMI input and enable enhanced HDMI mode on the TV where required.

An AV receiver or soundbar in the HDMI route also needs to pass that format. If the TV's built-in app plays HDR but the box does not, check the route before changing player settings.

2. Start with hardware decoding

Open Settings > Playback. Check Video decoder and Prefer hardware HEVC decoding. Hardware is the sensible starting point for high-resolution HEVC because it uses the device's dedicated decoder.

Software decoding can help diagnose a stream, but demands more processing power. A TV box or emulator may struggle with 4K HEVC in software.

3. Match the frame rate

Playback has separate Auto frame rate for VOD and Auto frame rate for TV settings. Enable the one appropriate to your viewing.

Matching refresh rate reduces cadence judder when a film and display use different rates. A brief black screen can occur while the display switches. AFR changes refresh rate, not the screen's HDR capabilities.

4. Check the actual picture mode

Use the TV's signal information to check whether it entered HDR or Dolby Vision mode. Tevium's badge identifies detected stream information; the TV shows what it receives.

Start with a known compatible sample and default format settings. Change one preference at a time so you can identify which affects the picture.

Wrong colours or failed playback

  • Select an HDR10 or SDR alternative when the device does not support the source's Dolby Vision profile.
  • Check the codec and resolution shown in the player error.
  • Try a supported physical TV device if the emulator fails.
  • Check the HDMI route if the TV never enters its expected picture mode.

Dolby Vision metadata handling is not universal tone mapping. Changing metadata alone does not guarantee correctly coloured HDR10/SDR output from every Dolby Vision Profile 5 source.

Bandwidth and audio

Choose a source bitrate your connection sustains. HDR alone does not determine bandwidth: resolution, bitrate and encoding matter. For surround sound, check the box's audio output and connected receiver or TV too.
